Uncommon Practice

Doctors whose lives took a shape nobody planned for them.

2 pieces in preparationA new story every other month.

From the editors

There is a standard shape to a medical life, and most of us are told about it early: the entrance exam, the degree, the postgraduate seat, the job, the practice. Plenty of doctors live it and are glad they did.

This collection is about the ones whose lives bent another way, by choice or by accident. They are not escape stories. Most of these doctors still practise. They have simply arranged medicine around a life, rather than the other way round.

In this collection

  1. In preparationUnusual lives

A doctor who works half the year

Six months of locum work, six months of something else entirely. How the arrangement works, and what it asks.

Portrait of a doctor outdoors in the place where they spend their months away from medicine.
  2. In preparationUnusual lives

    Starting over at forty

A senior doctor on leaving a settled career for a second one, and on what carried over.
